The timing of President Jimmy Carter’s loss of life on Sunday means U.S. flags will likely be at half-staff on Trump’s inauguration day subsequent month.

Flags are to be flown at half-staff for 30 days from the day of a present or former president’s loss of life “on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions,” as codified within the Workplace of the Federal Register in 1954.

The flag may even be lowered for a similar time period at U.S. embassies, army amenities, naval vessels and stations, and different amenities overseas, states Proclamation 3044, signed by President Dwight Eisenhower.

Carter died Sunday at age 100, almost two years after getting into hospice care, on the residence he had shared with spouse Rosalynn Carter till her loss of life final 12 months.

Trump gained the presidential election in opposition to Kamala Harris in November, setting the stage for a second time period by stocking his cupboard with billionaires and tv personalities. The ailing Carter had mentioned final fall that he wished to reside lengthy sufficient to vote for Harris.

The incoming president issued an announcement on Fact Social upon Carter’s loss of life that famous each his blended presidential legacy and his patriotism.

“The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump mentioned. “For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”

President Biden has declared a nationwide day of mourning to be held on Jan. 9, the day of Carter’s state funeral in Washington.
