Mayor Adams warned Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels to remain of their lane because the volunteer public security group mentioned they might resume subway patrols within the wake of a girl who was killed after being set on fireplace on a Brooklyn F practice. 

“If Curtis wants to be back down in the subway system, if he sees something, he should say something and he should do something,” Adams mentioned Tuesday. “Don’t overstep your boundaries, like they did a few months ago when they arrested an innocent person. Let the police do their job.”

The brand new patrols will include conducting wellness checks on individuals who seem like homeless, handing out water and reporting points to the NYPD. The Guardian Angels have at varied factors introduced their return to patrolling the subways and streets, particularly following high-profile violent incidents.

Groups of three will stroll the trains as they transfer by means of the system, the group has mentioned.

“I find it perplexing that Eric Adams would want to discourage volunteers providing help to the unprecedented amount of homeless suffering in our subways every single day,” Sliwa mentioned in response to Adams’ remarks, including that the Guardian Angels don’t make arrests.

The Angels want to broaden its membership, placing up flyers in practice vehicles urging straphangers to affix. 

Sliwa ran for mayor in 2021 on the Republican ticket and is anticipated to do the identical within the upcoming election.

The mayor, talking at his weekly press briefing, touted the town’s dropping crime statistics, saying that regardless of a couple of disturbing incidents New York remains to be secure general.

“Crime is not surging in the subway system,” Adams mentioned. “You know, we have some high-profile incidents and we’re really disturbed about it. But overall, crime is lowest.”
