People with an autism spectrum dysfunction (ASD) prognosis have an elevated prevalence of recognized dementia diagnoses, in line with a analysis letter revealed on-line Jan. 2 in JAMA Community Open.

Giacomo Vivanti, Ph.D., from the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexel College in Philadelphia, and colleagues performed a retrospective cohort examine to look at the nationwide prevalence of recognized dementia diagnoses in people with assigned ASD diagnoses in linked Medicare and Medicaid information. Given the identified affiliation between mental disabilities (ID) and dementia, an ASD-only group and an ASD-plus-ID group have been created (46,877 and 67,705 people, respectively).

The researchers discovered that an recognized dementia prognosis was current in 8.03 and eight.88 p.c of the ASD-only and ASD-plus-ID teams, respectively. With age, there was a rise seen within the odds of a dementia prognosis, with prevalence charges of 35.12 and 31.22 p.c within the ASD-only and ASD-plus-ID teams, respectively, amongst people older than 64 years. After controlling for residence state, greater odds of a dementia prognosis have been seen in people with cardiovascular danger components and melancholy or different psychiatric circumstances.

“Our data highlight the importance of health policy efforts for the growing ASD population at risk for or affected by dementia,” the authors write. “Future research should address factors that might contribute to the cooccurrence of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions, including barriers to accessing educational and social opportunities, as well as biological mechanisms of shared pathophysiology.”
