Nick Cave, R.E.M., Devo amongst artists releasing music for wildfire profit

A few of music’s main figures are on the forefront of two wildfire aid profit albums, a compilation of recent releases, stay and beforehand archived recordings. The data, titled “Los Angeles Rising” and “Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles,” will launch on Bandcamp Thursday and Friday, respectively.

The previous options 16 tracks, together with unreleased recordings from legendary Australian outfit Nick Cave and the Dangerous Seeds, PJ Harvey, Gary Numan, Primal Scream, Devo and Danny Elfman. Different notable songs embody “Turn Into Redux,” an alternate model of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ hit track off of 2006’s “Show Your Bones.” Jarvis Cocker of Pulp additionally lends an acoustic rendition of the timeless “California Dreamin’,” recorded again in 2020.

The venture, led by Bauhaus’ Kevin Haskins and document producer Nick Launay, is the fruit of tragedy. The 2 thought up the profit album after having to evacuate in the course of the current wildfires.

“I took my garden hose and soaked my yard and decks, and then took off,” Haskins recalled. “It was very stressful and I ended up in grid lock traffic getting through Hollywood.”

On the opposite aspect of the hearth, Launay confronted an identical course of. However they “were the lucky ones,” as many musicians and associates within the metropolis confronted the destruction of their beloved properties.

“Nick and I both reached out to every musician [and] band that we know and Nick Cave and PJ Harvey were the first to respond,” Haskins informed The Instances. “Once they were on board, the response was incredible. It has been a very heartwarming and inspiring experience to witness this wonderful show of humanity, when there’s so much negativity surrounding us these days.”

It was befitting that the album cowl could be created by longtime Los Feliz denizen and artist Shepard Fairey, who accomplished his work the day Haskins reached out to him.

“Los Angeles Rising” is donation-based with a $10 minimal and all proceeds will go to Candy Aid, a nonprofit charity for skilled artists and business staff.

Equally, “Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles” is one other compilation album being launched by Good Music, the 2020 brainchild of writer Dave Eggers and Jordan Kurland. The pair launched different comps in 2020 and 2022, titled “Good Music to Avert the Collapse of American Democracy” and “Good Music to Ensure Safe Abortion Access to All.” Each tasks raised a mixed whole of over $800,000.

Now, they’re again with a 90-song, single-day launch venture that includes the likes of Modest Mouse, Interpol, Toro y Moi and R.E.M. It actually gained’t disappoint followers, providing all the pieces from new music and stay variations to remixes and demos, highlighted by the Postal Service and Dying Cab For Cutie’s cowl of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.”

The album, priced at $20.25, will donate all of its Good Music proceeds to California Group Basis’s Wildfire Restoration Fund and L.A. Regional Meals Financial institution. Bandcamp will match this, donating 100% of their share to MusiCares.
