WASHINGTON (AP) — The chief of employees to Home Speaker Mike Johnson was arrested Tuesday evening on suspicion of driving beneath the affect after crashing right into a police car following President Donald Trump’s deal with to Congress.

Hayden Haynes was arrested on a cost of driving beneath the affect and later launched.

In an announcement Wednesday, U.S. Capitol Police mentioned Haynes had “backed into a parked vehicle” shortly earlier than midnight. Officers responded to the scene and “arrested [Haynes] for DUI.”

A spokesperson for Johnson mentioned the speaker was “aware of the encounter that occurred last night involving his Chief of Staff and the Capitol Police” and that Haynes has an “esteemed reputation among Members and staff alike.”

Chatting with reporters, Johnson mentioned he’s identified Haynes for greater than a decade and mentioned he’s “trusted and respected, and he has my full faith and confidence to lead.”

Haynes is a longtime, trusted aide to Johnson — a Louisiana Republican — and has served because the speaker’s chief of employees since Johnson took on the function in 2023.

Haynes didn’t instantly reply to a message looking for remark and it wasn’t instantly clear whether or not he had an lawyer who may touch upon his behalf.
