30K gallons of sewage leak into L.I. harbor; advisory issued

A sewage leak that reached the floor waters in Port Jefferson Harbor in Suffolk County has prompted well being officers to difficulty an advisory asking residents and guests to keep away from contact with the water till a minimum of 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The discharge within the city of Brookhaven was brought on by {an electrical} malfunction in one of many space’s UV disinfection items, in keeping with the New York Division of Environmental Conservation.

UV disinfection works by exposing contaminated water to ultraviolet lights to kill dangerous microorganisms.

For about two hours on Monday, 30,000 gallons of “partially treated waste without disinfection” flowed into the waters of Port Jefferson Harbor prompting the company to designate shellfish harvesting within the harbor complicated and its tributaries as uncertified, or closed.

Officers mentioned the measure, impacting roughly 1,600 acres of shellfishing beds, is being taken to guard public well being. Harvesting will stay suspended till the company determines that “conditions no longer exist that may make shellfish hazardous for use as food.”

“Without disinfection, partially treated sewage effluent carries high levels of pathogenic bacteria and viruses,” officers mentioned. “When water quality in the enclosed harbors and bays is adversely affected by sewage, shellfish in these areas have an increased potential to be hazardous for use as food.”

In the meantime, residents and guests are being requested to take precautions when taking part in leisure actions close to the waters of the Port Jefferson Harbor Advanced.

“Keep children and pets away from the area,” officers say. “If contact does occur, rinse off the affected area with clean water immediately.”
