Ex-MLB pitcher Dan Serafini convicted of murdering father-in-law

Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini was convicted Monday of murdering his father-in-law and trying to homicide his mother-in-law in 2021.

Serafini, 51, fatally shot Gary Spohr and critically wounded Wendy Wooden after breaking into their house in North Lake Tahoe, Calif., on June 5, 2021. Spohr, 70, and Wooden, 68, have been the mother and father of Serafini’s spouse, Erin Spohr.

Although Wooden survived the assault, she died by suicide in March 2023. Serafini was not arrested and charged within the case till October 2023.

Investigators mentioned Serafini staked out Spohr and Wooden’s house for hours, mendacity in wait outdoors till they arrived house. Surveillance cameras on the house captured a person sporting a hood, face overlaying and backpack lurking outdoors the residence on the day of the murders.

Previous to the assault, Serafini and his in-laws have been concerned in a protracted argument over a $1.3 million ranch property in Texas, in keeping with prosecutors. Serafini’s brother, Joseph Serafini Jr., testified at trial that Dan as soon as supplied him $20,000 to kill Spohr and Wooden.

One other defendant within the case, 33-year-old Samantha Scott, pleaded responsible in February to being an adjunct to homicide. Scott testified that she drove Serafini to his in-laws’ neighborhood, then watched him throw gun components out of a window once they returned to Nevada. She has not but been sentenced.

Serafini pitched in seven MLB seasons with six totally different groups from 1996-2007, starting with three years on the Minnesota Twins. He had a profession ERA of 6.04 in simply over 263 innings; he now faces as much as life in jail at his Aug. 18 sentencing listening to.
