Fireplace Breaks Out in Tribeca Constructing Housing Two Artwork Galleries

Two artwork galleries in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood had been affected when a hearth broke out in a constructing on Wednesday night time, January 22.

Simply earlier than midnight, the New York Metropolis Fireplace Division (FDNY) responded to a hearth originating from the cellar of a seven-story mixed-use constructing at 45 White Road, the place two up to date artwork galleries are positioned. The Journal Gallery co-owner Michael Nevin mentioned that whereas the hearth didn’t attain the house, the gallery suffered damages from FDNY’s efforts to cease the blaze. In response to an FDNY report shared with Hyperallergic, the hearth was extinguished in roughly 4 hours. Two firefighters suffered minor accidents whereas responding to the blaze, the reason for which is at the moment underneath investigation.

Nevin informed Hyperallergic that “there was damage to the space, but in terms of artwork, we are still assessing.”

Nevin mentioned he first discovered of the hearth after receiving messages from acquaintances at round 8am this morning, January 23. He initially thought the messages had been referring to his Los Angeles gallery house, which was unaffected by the current devastating blazes.

“We were lucky,” Nevin informed Hyperallergic. “It’s been this very strange start to the year.” 

Nevin mentioned it’s too early to know when the gallery will reopen, including, “We look forward to being back in the space.”
