French politician says U.S. ought to return Statue of Liberty

A French European parliament member quipped over the weekend that the U.S. ought to return the Statue of Liberty to France after President Trump determined “to side with the tyrants” towards Ukraine.

Raphaël Glucksmann, a a member of the European Parliament and co-president of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, a small left-wing social gathering in France, steered in a speech Sunday that the U.S. was not worthy of the present it obtained from France within the Eighteen Eighties.

Glucksmann accused Trump and different Individuals of selecting “to switch to the side of the tyrants.”

“Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” he joked. “It was our gift to you. But apparently you despise her. So she will be happy here with us.”

Glucksmann’s feedback got here after the administration suspended help and intelligence sharing with Ukraine to hurry up negotiations to finish the battle, which began in February 2022 when Russian launched its invasion.

The U.S. later resumed intelligence sharing and safety help amid productive talks on a ceasefire proposal.

Glucksmann additionally alluded to the present administration’s immigration insurance policies, by referencing New York poet Emma Lazarus’ phrases concerning the statue, the “mighty woman with a torch” who welcomed the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

“Today, this land is ceasing to be what it was,” he stated.

Trump’s White Home press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, dismissed Glucksmann’s demand Monday, describing him as an “unnamed low-level French politician” who must be grateful he isn’t talking German, a reference to the Nazi’s invasion of the nation throughout World Warfare 2.

Glucksmann’s request is unlikely to be granted.

UNESCO, the United Nations’ group that features the statue on record of World Heritage websites, says the statue belongs to the U.S. authorities.

It was transported to the U.S. in 350 items in 1885 and was formally unveiled Oct. 28, 1886.
