Home Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly warned Republican lawmakers towards subpoenaing the cellphone data of key Jan. 6 witness Cassidy Hutchinson, saying doing so may reveal “sexual texts” that may embarrass a few of his colleagues.

Hutchinson served as a whistleblower within the bipartisan Home Committee on the Jan. 6 Assault that concluded “former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed,” was liable for the lethal 2021 storming of the Capitol. Testimony from Hutchinson, a former aide to Republican White Home Chief of Employees Mark Meadows, helped investigators attain that conclusion.

Since successful a Home majority in 2022, Republicans led by Johnson and constant to Trump have dedicated themselves to investigating these investigators. However when Johnson thought-about calling for Hutchinson’s cellphone data in June, an aide reportedly warned that Republicans won’t like what he finds.

The unnamed aide allegedly mentioned a number of colleagues had raised issues with Johnson’s workplace that “sexual texts from [Congress] members who were trying to engage in sexual favors” with Hutchinson could possibly be present in her cellphone, based on correspondence reviewed by the Washington Put up.

In a subsequent assembly, GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who was tapped to guide the investigation into the Jan. 6 committee, was reportedly on condition that warning as nicely. The panel finally opted to not subpoena Hutchinson.

Largely dismissive of the Put up’s story, Johnson mentioned Thursday he by no means suggested Loudermilk to not subpoena Hutchinson, and that the scuttlebutt was “much ado about nothing.” Loudermilk mentioned the choice was made as a result of Hutchinson was already cooperating with the panel, based on The Hill.

What the probably soiled textual content messages involving Hutchinson may say or who despatched them isn’t clear. In talking to the Put up, her lawyer didn’t handle whether or not any such texts exist.
