LI man arrested for arson after Memorial Day home hearth attracts 100 firefighters

A Lengthy Island man was arrested late Monday evening following a home hearth that killed three pets and mobilized dozens of firefighters in Plainview, authorities mentioned.

Almost 100 firefighters from six completely different departments battled the hearth, which was primarily concentrated within the again portion of the residence, in accordance with Bethpage Fireplace Division Chief Francis DeBobes.

“We had a fire out the rear of the house, the entire rear of the house, and coming out the front door,” DeBobes mentioned.

In a while Monday, the Nassau County Police Division arrested 40-year-old Jahan Kia in reference to the hearth.

Kia, who’s described as a tenant of the residence, is charged with arson, prison mischief and animal cruelty, on-line courtroom information present. He’s believed to have began the hearth within the basement stairwell.

The hearth was extinguished in about half-hour, officers mentioned. Whereas no residents had been injured throughout the blaze, two canines and one cat had been reportedly killed.

Two firefighters had been transported to a close-by hospital for smoke inhalation and burns to their fingers.

Kia is scheduled to be arraigned in Nassau District Courtroom on Tuesday.

Underneath New York legislation, an individual convicted of third-degree arson — outlined as “intentionally [damaging] a building or motor vehicle by starting a fire or causing an explosion” — can resist 15 years in jail.
