Mamdani names Christine Clarke new head of NYC Fee on Human Rights

Mayor Mamdani appointed a brand new head of town’s Fee on Human Rights, selecting Christine Clarke, beforehand a litigator at Authorized Companies NYC, to serve within the position.

Clarke will change Annabel Palma within the position. Palma was initially tapped to guide the fee by ex-Mayor de Blasio and was reappointed by Mayor Adams in 2022.

“We will make this city more just, and we will do so as New Yorkers, not by shying away from complexity or conflict, but by confronting what we know to be wrong wherever it arises,” Mamdani stated at a Jackson Heights press convention asserting Clarke’s appointment.

The fee is tasked with investigating complaints of discrimination and different human rights regulation violations.

“That work has never been more important, and the person entrusted to lead it has never been more important, either,” Mamdani stated, praising Clarke for her dedication “to fighting for New Yorkers who need a champion.”

Clarke named housing as considered one of her prime priorities within the position, saying that she goals to enhance on yearslong delays tenants with discrimination complaints have confronted, per a December report from the State Comptroller’s Workplace.

“Ultimately,” she stated, “no matter where you were born, what language you speak, what religion you practice, whether you have a disability, your race or ethnicity, your gender identity or your sexual orientation, if you live here, you are a New Yorker, and I promise as the chair of the Commission on Human Rights to work with you and to fight for you.”

Clarke will work underneath Julie Su, Mamdani’s deputy mayor for financial justice.

The mayor additionally on Wednesday appointed Simonia Brown as a prime coverage adviser to deal with executing Mamdani’s affordability agenda in Albany. Brown beforehand labored in de Blasio’s state legislative affairs workplace.
