WASHINGTON — A difficult season for Francisco Alvarez continues with one other damage.
The Mets positioned the catcher on the 10-day injured record with a proper thumb damage Tuesday afternoon, recalling Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse to take his spot on the roster. It’s unrelated to the left thumb damage he suffered early final season, in addition to separate from the hamate surgical procedure he underwent on his left hand throughout spring coaching in March.
Alvarez suffered the damage through the Mets’ win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday evening in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, throughout MLB’s Little League Basic. The severity of the damage shouldn’t be but recognized, however there’s some preliminary concern Alvarez might be out for the remainder of the season.
It’s a less-than-ideal time for the 23-year-old Venezuelan, to say the least. A revamped swing and a hand damage left him looking for his stride on the plate over the primary half of the season. Alvarez hit simply .236 within the first half and was even demoted to Triple-A Syracuse for a stretch in June, with the Mets desirous to see him enhance his timing on fastballs, in addition to clear up some parts of his defensive recreation. Since returning, he’s hit .323 with a 1.054 OPS and 4 dwelling runs.
The Mets start a six-game street journey Tuesday in Washington in opposition to the Nationals.
