SAN DIEGO — The Mets have been vocal about prioritizing the bullpen forward of the commerce deadline, and have made good on the promise to strengthen it by buying and selling for right-hander Tyler Rogers on Wednesday afternoon, based on reviews. The return is hefty: right-hander Jose Butto goes again to San Francisco within the deal, in a uncommon commerce that includes a huge leaguer for a giant leaguer, in addition to two of the Mets’ high prospects in outfielder Drew Gilbert and right-handed starter Blade Tidwell.
It’s the second commerce for a reliever since Friday. Left-hander Gregory Soto was traded to the Mets from the Baltimore Orioles in alternate for 2 minor league pitchers.
A 34-year-old submariner, Rogers is hard to choose up and suppresses arduous contact. He throws a sinker and a slider, making his dwelling in getting outs on the bottom with a 64.4% ground-ball price, ranked within the 99th percentile by Statcast. Rogers leads the NL in appearances this season with 53, going 4-3 with a 1.80 ERA over 50 innings. A free agent on the finish of the season, Rogers has performed everything of his seven-year profession with San Francisco.
The dual brother of right-handed reliever Taylor Rogers, each brothers have been traded Wednesday, with the Cincinnati Reds sending Taylor and a shortstop prospect to the Pittsburgh Pirates in alternate for third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
