NYC helicopter in deadly Hudson River crash had no flight recorders: NTSB

The doomed helicopter that plunged into the Hudson River Thursday, killing its pilot and 5 passengers, had no flight recorders geared up, federal officers mentioned.

The Bell 206 L-4 helicopter, operated by New York Helicopter in Manhattan, was on its eighth flight of the day when it dropped from the sky throughout a sightseeing tour Thursday afternoon, in accordance with the Nationwide Transportation Security Board.

Investigators have recovered the helicopter’s fundamental fuselage, together with its cockpit and cabin, the ahead portion of its tail growth, its horizontal stabilizer finlets and its vertical fin, the NTSB introduced Saturday evening.

A few of these components will probably be despatched to the NTSB laboratories in Washington, officers mentioned.

NYPD divers are nonetheless in search of the chopper’s fundamental rotor, fundamental gear field, tail rotor and a big portion of its tail growth.

Thus far, investigators have discovered no onboard cameras or video recorders and the helicopter’s avionics didn’t file any helpful info, NTSB officers mentioned. The helicopter’s final inspection was on March 1.

Spanish vacationers Agustin Escobar, the CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, his spouse Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three younger youngsters all died within the crash, as did pilot Sean Johnson, after items of the helicopter, together with the rotor, appeared to interrupt off in mid-air.

The helicopter overturned and fell from the sky, hitting the river the other way up.

Not less than 38 individuals have died in helicopter accidents in New York Metropolis since 1977.
