New York Metropolis officers are hoping a brand new site visitors mild design will catch the attention of Manhattan cyclists.

Smaller, eye-level site visitors lights are being put in alongside a portion of the Third Ave. bike lane, metropolis Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez introduced Wednesday, in an effort to extend cyclists’ compliance with site visitors indicators.

The brand new site visitors lights come after a 2023 overhaul of the East Facet thoroughfare, which concerned a slew of bus and bike enhancements — and months after the hall bought town’s “green wave” remedy, aligning the timing of inexperienced lights with typical bike owner speeds.

“Our transformative redesign of Third Avenue has already made the street safe — whether you are walking, biking or driving,” Rodriguez mentioned Wednesday in an announcement.

“These new traffic signals for cyclists complement our green wave traffic timing, the next natural step in making sure the thousands of cyclists who use this street every day can keep both themselves and the many pedestrians crossing Third Avenue safe,” he mentioned.

The primary of the brand new lights is at Third Ave. and E. 69th St., with extra anticipated to be added at intersections the place motor automobiles making left-hand turns will cross the bicycle lane.

Emily Jacobi, an organizer with Transportation Options, welcomed the brand new eye-level indicators.

“With cars, bikes and pedestrians all navigating the intersection, it can be unclear when you’re supposed to cross,” she mentioned. “This initial rollout uptown will make the streets of the Upper East Side safer for everyone.”
