Three new curbside spots have been carved out on the Higher West Aspect to make bundle supply by cargo bike simpler, metropolis transportation officers introduced Tuesday.

“With more and more New Yorkers ordering online, our streets are seeing more trucks than ever before,” metropolis Division of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez advised reporters at eighty fifth St. and Amsterdam Ave. “Nearly 90% of goods in our city are delivered by truck.”

The three so-called “micro-hubs” that opened Tuesday are an effort to scale back how typically these vans must squeeze down slim residential streets within the borough of Manhattan.

Basically, a painted swath of asphalt behind plastic visitors bollards, the hubs are devoted spots the place items that entered the neighborhood behind a truck could be offloaded and redistributed to cargo bikes, e-bikes or pushcarts for the ultimate leg of their journey.

“More than 84% of New Yorkers place an order four times a week to get a delivery to their apartment,” Rodriguez mentioned. “We want to work toward a goal where deliveries are made efficiently and safe[ly].”

First introduced two years in the past, the pilot program goals to maintain giant supply vans from blocking slim facet streets or obstructing crosswalks whereas making their rounds.

A hub at Amsterdam Ave. and W. 73rd St. will likely be utilized by UPS, one at Broadway and W. 77th St. will likely be utilized by Amazon, and the hub at Amsterdam Ave. and W. eighty fifth St. will likely be utilized by New York-based agency Web Zero Logistics.

Rodriguez mentioned New Yorkers can anticipate 33 extra hubs citywide inside the subsequent three years.
