New York Metropolis mayoral candidate Zellnor Myrie is looking for a one-year hire freeze for tenants in rent-stabilized residences — becoming a member of a number of different Democratic hopefuls.

Nevertheless, Myrie, like a few of his rivals, is stopping in need of making any broader name or promise as to what he’d do as mayor.

The candidate has not dedicated by some means about his stance on hire freezes for months. This name comes after most of his rivals within the June major have firmed up their very own positions.

The one-year pause represents a relative center floor for the candidate, who’s accepting marketing campaign donations from actual property moguls and emphasizing housing growth throughout the town.

Myrie’s push for a hire freeze relies on new knowledge from the Lease Pointers Board, he mentioned. He underlined the pause’s significance by pointing to his background rising up in a rent-stabilized house and his household’s wrestle to pay the payments.

“This is a reality that far too many New Yorkers are facing today and as Mayor, I’ll appoint members of the Rent Guidelines Board that will put tenants first,” Myrie mentioned in a press release. “After reviewing the 2025 RGB Report, I urge the board to implement a rent freeze for this upcoming year to help New Yorkers like my mom make ends meet.”

Myrie vowed to nominate board members who would make “data-driven decisions” annually on whether or not to boost rents for rent-stabilized tenants.

His marketing campaign mentioned that considerations concerning the impacts of the Trump administration’s tariffs and funding cuts additionally performed a job in his choice.

Among the many mayoral candidates, Metropolis Comptroller Brad Lander, Scott Stringer and Metropolis Council Speaker Adrienne Adams have all not too long ago come out in help of a hire freeze. Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani has made a broad hire freeze a rallying cry for his marketing campaign, and State Sen. Jessica Ramos and former Bronx Assemblymember Michael Blake have additionally campaigned on a freeze.

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has come out towards hire freezes, whereas Mayor Adams on Monday didn’t commit both means, as a substitute saying that the town wants to guard small landlords. Below Adams, the board has accepted annual hire hikes of round 3%.

Members of the board are appointed by the mayor. The freeze applies to the roughly a million hire stabilized models within the metropolis.

The Lease Pointers Board is about to vote on whether or not to extend rents for stabilized models on Wednesday.
