In celebration of the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008), the Museum of the Metropolis of New York (MCNY) presents Robert Rauschenberg’s New York: Photos from the Actual World. This dynamic exhibition explores Rauschenberg’s modern integration of images and located objects into his artwork, reflecting his deep engagement with “the real world” and his complicated relationship with New York Metropolis. The present is organized into three sections — “Early Photographs,” “In + Out City Limits,” and “Photography in Painting” — tracing the evolution of Rauschenberg’s photographic observe and its interaction with portray, sculpture, and assemblage.

The centerpiece of the exhibition on the Museum of the Metropolis of New York is In + Out Metropolis Limits, a three-year (1979–81) photographic survey carried out throughout america — a venture Rauschenberg had initially conceived many years earlier as a pupil at Black Mountain School in North Carolina. His New York images from this venture reveal his fascination with the indicators and symbols of human tradition, even in essentially the most humble or discarded remnants of town. Collectively, these photographs emphasize his observational rigor and his fixed effort to channel the fleeting, ineffable moments of life into his work — revealing a deep sensitivity to the social panorama.
As well as, the exhibition presents a number of works created between 1963 and 1994 that mix Rauschenberg’s New York Metropolis images with pictures taken all over the world, illustrating how he re-contextualized his photographic imagery via his modern inventive course of.
