WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has given 36 nations, most of them in Africa, a Wednesday deadline to commit to enhance vetting of vacationers or face a ban on their residents visiting the US.

A weekend diplomatic cable despatched by the State Division instructs embassies and consulates within the 36 nations to gauge their host nations’ willingness by Wednesday to enhance their residents’ journey documentation and take steps to deal with the standing of their nationals who’re in the US illegally.

The cable, which was described to The Related Press, asks the nations to take motion to deal with the U.S. considerations inside 60 days or threat being added to the present journey ban, which now contains 12 nations. Of the 36 new nations focused, 25 are in Africa.

It’s the newest step by the Trump administration to crack down on those that overstay their visas and tying U.S. entries from sure nations to potential nationwide safety dangers. Trump has mentioned some nations have “deficient” screening and vetting or have traditionally refused to take again their very own residents. Some nations condemned the journey restrictions and vowed reciprocal actions, whereas some resettlement teams say the ban sows division.

State Division spokeswoman Tammy Bruce declined to touch upon the specifics within the cable, which was first reported by The Washington Put up. She confirmed that the administration needed nations to enhance their very own vetting processes for passport holders, settle for their nationals deported from the U.S. and take different steps to make sure their residents aren’t a risk to the U.S.

“We’re looking at providing a period of time, (where if countries) don’t get to that point where we can trust them and they’ve got to change the system, update it, do whatever they need to do to convince us that we can trust the process and the information they have,” she mentioned.

It was not instantly clear if the ban can be imposed on nations that commit to creating enhancements and are making progress in addressing them however fail to fulfill the benchmarks inside 60 days.

The 36 nations recognized within the new cable are: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Dominica, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
