To win transportation funding beneath the brand new Donald Trump administration, the MTA must cooperate with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, can’t implement masks or vaccine necessities — and had higher hope New Yorkers begin tying the knot and making infants.

The weird tips for federal transportation funding are a part of an order signed earlier this week by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy — an ex-reality-TV star and two-term Wisconsin congressman — at some point after his affirmation.

“To the extent practicable, relevant, appropriate and consistent with law,” the order reads, DOT is to adjudicate funding choices to prioritize mitigating “family specific difficulties,” and “give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average.”

Companies that get federal {dollars} for transportation initiatives are additionally now forbidden from instituting any for of masks or vaccine mandate.

The order additionally stipulates that recipients of federal DOT funding will likely be required to adjust to federal immigration enforcement, in addition to any “other goals and objectives specified by” Trump.

The order, signed Wednesday, is meant to “strengthen American families by focusing on real, measurable benefits rather than ideological considerations,” in line with a press launch from the USDOT, which paired the order with one other geared toward “Woke Rescission” — the elimination of all local weather change, variety and environmental justice initiatives on the division.

Requested concerning the order at an unrelated press gaggle Friday, MTA chairman Janno Lieber stated he hadn’t seen it.

“Historically, DOT has established core, transportation-related criteria [for funding], and those have been successful,” he instructed reporters. “We hope and expect that those will continue to be basis for how money and grants are distributed.”

Requested if the MTA would cooperate with ICE brokers as a requirement for funding, Lieber stated his company would comply with the legislation.

“If there are folks who are sought for criminal activity, who are suspects or charged with criminal with criminal activity, we’re absolutely going to going to cooperate [with immigration agents,]” Lieber stated. “Otherwise, we’re going to follow the lead of the state in how to handle any other situation.”

It remained unclear on Friday how Duffy’s order can be carried out, and the way any of the prioritization of communities by marriage charges or delivery charges might be construed as “practicable, relevant, appropriate and consistent with law.”

A spokesman for Sen. Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat who served as Majority Chief till this month — and who has constructed a repute for guiding federal funding towards New York Metropolis transportation initiatives — stated the Democratic chief was assured that the Empire State’s transit community would proceed to be funded.

Federal transportation grants are a key supply of funding for a lot of regional enlargement initiatives.

The feds have dedicated $3.4 billion in direction of the $7.7 billion part 2 of the Second Avenue Subway, and subsequent expansions of the road are anticipated to be equally reliant on DOT funding. The Interborough Specific light-rail venture connecting Brooklyn to Queens — a $5.5 billion venture — is predicted to depend on some $3 billion in federal funds.

A brand new rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River — the crown jewel of the Gateway venture meant to enhance and broaden rail entry between New York and New Jersey — is reliant on $6.9 Billion in federal funds. The brand new tracks, bridges and infrastructure required to benefit from the brand new tunnel — a laundry record of upgrades to the strains crossing the northern New Jersey swamplands — is predicted to want important federal investments as properly.

And it’s not simply trains. Town’s DOT is looking for federal DOT grants towards its efforts to restore and re-design of the BQE’s triple cantilever roadway in Downtown Brooklyn.
